LWW 186: Writing Lessons from the Women’s World Cup

Programming note: We’re planning an ask us anything episode, so please let us know your burning questions.

TB has had an intense summer, but she has status updates on all three of her writing projects. It’s possible there’s an end in sight for all her deadline misery. There’s more good news. There’s tennis on the telly and it’s finally September. Bring on fall!

Clare Looking SummeryClare’s had a breakthrough with the book she’s working on. Woot! When she finishes this book, she has another she needs to wrap up this autumn. Busy time! As it turns out, Clare’s Italian translation isn’t live yet, but it’s on preorder. Sadly, she’s learned a disturbing trend in Italy.

They crash on to the topic: writing lessons from the Women’s World Cup. Clare, the football fanatic, leads the discussion this time. She shares ten things she learned from watching all the matches. Get a cup of tea, settle in, and have a listen.

    Hi fellow lesbians…..(hee hee)

I loooove your podcast and you both are the BEST! Pardon my sobbing, just read Lizzie number 11 and she seems to be going bye bye, boohoo.

I have written a novel (straight because I started it 12 years ago) but all from now on will be lesfic. I read almost 300 books a year, 99% are lesfic.

Question: How much, ballpark, should I expect to pay for developmental and line-copy editing? I only paid $300 for this debut novel, but she knows me personally. I’m sure that is very, very low.

    I absolutely love you guys,
    Bon Peterson

    Hello!

Thanks again for your podcast, I’m learning a lot and having fun in the process! If you’re doing an “ask us anything”, I’d love to hear your thoughts on:
    1. Pre-orders – Do you always do them, the pros and cons and any thoughts on what’s the optimal preorder period?
    2. Audiobooks – Do you have any guidance to authors considering investing in audiobooks? I’d love to offer my book in audio, but it’s a big investment and I’m worried about not earning my money back. For example, are there any rules of thumb we can apply to estimate how many audiobook sales we’re likely to have based on ebook/print sales? (Eg, if you sell 1000 ebooks/print then you’re likely to sell on average 250 audiobooks)

Thanks so much, and apologies if you’ve addressed these questions before. I’m still working my way through all the last episodes!

    Liz
