LWW 15: Let’s Talk About Lesbian Sex Scenes

TB & Clare kick off this episode by chatting about their weeks. TB had yet another bloody disaster, and Clare struck out five times scoring Hamilton tickets. On the village romance front, TB has sent her novel to be proofed. Clare, who is on the second draft, was knocked down by two migraines. Ouch!

Highlights: during the episode, Clare manages to crush TB’s historian heart twice, and TB finally breaks Clare near the end of the recording.

Then it’s down to the topic of the day: writing lesbian sex scenes. They discuss the difference between romance and erotica. The duo shares tips for how to write them, including key things writers should think about and what to avoid, including two words in particular. TB and Clare disagree about including gratuitous scenes, and they confess to spending a lot of time thinking about body parts and sexual terms, all for the craft of course. The big takeaway is to remember these scenes are about characters and emotions.

Stop back next week when they’ll be discussing choosing between indie and traditional publishing. If you’d like to leave a comment on the episode, head over to www.lesbianswhowrite.com. They’d love to hear from you. Or you can email them at: lesbianswhowrite@gmail.com

    Brilliant!

You two brightening up my day as always with giggles. This was your best podcast yet, thank you for all the advice!!!

  2. Nik says:

Awesome. It still makes me smile when you guys drop eff bombs. I am with TB on the mint ice cream, though I am not saying that Clare sucks. She is pretty cool, especially that smooth accent. YummY!

    • admin says:

Hi Nik! Even though you refused to say Clare sucks (she cheats with that charming British accent) I’m still taking this as a win for mint chocolate chip ice cream. Thanks for listening and commenting! TB

  3. Miira says:

Thanks for the laughs and insights, again. Oh, and TB: you poor repressed American! 😀

    • admin says:

Hi Miira! I know. I need help when it comes to being too American. Living in Europe helped some, but it was a culture shock on so many levels. Thanks for listening and commenting! TB

  4. Kathy says:

First, Clare sucks and TB wins mint chocolate chip ice cream debate!!!

This podcast cracked me up. It’s amazing how bashful grown women are discussing sex scenes and words to use, but you both had me laughing.

I just love the two of you. Keep up the great work!

I know you mentioned Harper, but another great author, in my opinion, is JA Armstrong (Nancy Healy). Her series are terrific and her sex scenes fit right in. ( How’s that for a double entendres? Ha! Ha!

    • admin says:

Hi Kathy! Thanks for backing me up on the mint chocolate chip ice cream debate. You totally rock!

It’s funny how embarrassing it can be talking about sex when both of us write sex scenes. And, thanks for mentioning JA Armstrong. I agree with you on that front.

      We appreciate your support! TB

  5. Chris says:

First podcast I’ve come across …. lots of laughs!

And I agree with Nik about Clare’s accent 😉

    Cheers

    • admin says:

Hi Chris! So glad you stumbled upon the podcast and you picked a fab episode to sink your teeth into, so to speak. Clare’s charming accent is mentioned a lot. It’s become one of our selling points. Thanks so much for listening and please let us know if you want us to discuss anything about writing or lesbian fiction.

      • Chris says:

I feel like there’s so many ice-cream comments that I should have added that in.

And not afraid to say black raspberry cheesecake was my fav (before giving up dairy), lol.

        • admin says:

Ooo… that sounds wonderful. Will have to track down that flavor, all for the sake of being fair before saying mint chocolate chip is better. Whoops, did I already say it? I’ll still try it, though.

  6. Donna Renee says:

Finished listening hours ago but just took the required breather & take the time to write a comment. TB & Clare, you ladies are hilarious! The most interesting tidbit was learning how many sex scenes in a book make it romance or erotica and the word choices for our erogenous zones (LOL). Thank you for sharing your process for writing sex scenes. I’ve enjoyed them in both of your bodies of work.

    • admin says:

Hi Donna! I’m glad you’ve recovered. I have to admit, I may still be blushing. Reading your comment, I can’t remember if I’ve used erogenous zones. I may have to steal that one. Thanks so much for listening and for your support. TB

  7. Thea says:

Hi there! I’ve been listening for a while, but I couldn’t resist leaving a comment this time!
Brilliant episode! Hilarious , but also pretty informative! Loved it!
I am really enjoing this podcast, so thank you both, Clare with the charming accent and TB with the hearty laugh!

P.S. I don’t understand what all the fuss is about… ice cream!( Oh,no! Could this be the statement to unite Clare and TB? 😉 )

    • admin says:

Hi Thea! Thanks so much for commenting. Don’t be shy. We love knowing what people think. Although your ice cream comment is slightly confusing. I take my ice cream flavors very seriously 😉

I think Clare’s charming accent is one of the biggest draws.

We appreciate you listening and hope to keep you entertained. Let us know if you’d like us to tackle a certain subject. TB

  8. Melissa Tereze says:

I may or may not have choked on dinner listening to this. Brilliant. Thanks for the advice, ladies.

Also, if it ain’t mint, I’m not interested.

    • admin says:

Hi Melissa! Maybe we should add a warning about the possibility of choking if eating while listening?

And, another vote for mint! Doing a fist pump.

Thanks so much for listening. TB

  9. Chris says:

So since I can’t seem to find the option to comment on past episodes, they’ll get lumped here, sorry 😉

And a side note before starting … glad I work from home as you two are hilarious and laughs would not be appreciated on my floor (based on the job I do, lol)

    Episode 2:

    – Christmas movies are FAB …. It’s A Wonderful Life is the BEST!
    – Lesbian Hallmark Channel sounds great, but good luck as Hallmark has only just started issuing LGBT cards, lol

    Episode 3:

    – Raisin in anything (especially chocolate brownies) …. yum! (PS – does Costa have your treat back? I enjoyed the chocolate cake at Caffe Nero on my two trips in 2016 + 2018)

    Episode 4:

    – I think us Canadians have the upper hand on Brits for politeness 😉
    – TB … you should cook / mash carrots + turnips (great combo!) and add plain apple sauce to veggies (still trying that on my 8.5 yr old, lol)

    Episode 6:

    – Yay for collaborations! And lesbian drama … that NEVER happens 😉
    – How do both feel on book reviews?

    Episode 7:

    – Taxes. Are. Shitty.
    – TB … how did you not know abt Robin Hood and Nottingham??? Yes … Clare just mentioned Kevin Costner, which is what I was going to say, lol
    – I think I lose points on my lesbian card for NOT liking the Indigo Girls, lol

    Episode 8:

    – Raw cookie dough is so awful 🙁

    • admin says:

Hi Chris! I’ve got to say, you’re extremely organized! I love it.

I have not tried the applesauce/veggie trick, but I’m not sure it would work on me. I’m very stubborn when it comes to my dislikes.

I’m still disappointed in myself about not making the Robin Hood/Nottingham connection sooner. But, it should be noted, I’m terrible at knowing where I am. Since moving back to the US, my friends have been teasing me for not knowing which direction to walk or drive. If I say left, go right. Although, I’ll argue with you, even though deep down I know I’m wrong. I mentioned I’m stubborn, right?

And, I’m confused. You like mashed carrots and turnips, but not cookie dough. Simply can’t wrap my brain around this one.

Thanks so much for listening and I truly enjoyed reading all of your reactions. TB
